First Draw Success! Mole Valley Community Lottery has 25 Winners in its First Week

29 July 2021

A winning start to Mole Valley District Council’s new Community Lottery as Mr B Mcillroy won £250 on Saturday night! In his own words, “I have never won anything, so if I can win this lottery I would thoroughly recommend anybody that’s interested in the local community to buy a ticket or tickets.”

Mr Mcillroy was supporting Dyscover, a specialist charity helping people with Aphasia*. He was helped by them following a stroke and joined them himself in 2012 as a member. “The help they gave me resulted in improving my speech and my confidence. I was so grateful for their help that I became a volunteer. For me it’s not about winning, it is about raising money for the various charities and the local community through the Mole Valley Community lottery.”

Councillor Claire Malcomson, Cabinet Member for Climate Change said: “We had over 25 winners in the first lottery draw on Saturday, which is a smashing start to our new lottery. We already have over 40 Good Causes supported by the lottery and the winners reflected a range of these causes, so if you know of a local group that would like to raise more funds please see the website for how to take part.”

Each lottery ticket costs £1, with 50p going to the local good cause of the player’s choice and 10p to a fund run by Mole Valley District Council which benefits climate change initiatives, the Environment Fund, in Mole Valley. The draw takes place every Saturday at 8pm and winners are emailed directly.  Each player is in with a chance of winning a £25K jackpot, plus other prizes every week.

Editors Notes:

Aphasia* – Aphasia is a communication disability that is caused by damage to the language processing centres of the brain, most commonly through stroke. It can affect the ability to speak, read, write and understand what’s being said and is a very frustrating and isolating condition. Aphasia can be mild or severe, depending on the type and extent of damage to the brain.

It is one of the most enduring consequences of stroke and can be the most difficult to overcome.

Louise Burns, supporting Surrey Hills Community Radio said, “I heard about the lottery through the radio social media. It’s fantastic to win especially in the first week, so lovely to support the local community and a win is a bonus.

“I would absolutely recommend others to sign up to the lottery as there’s so many chances to win not just with your chosen numbers, like the random giveaway that I won. It’s a great opportunity to support the Mole Valley community and get involved.”

£25 Winner

Quote from Mike Sharp, supporting Surrey Hills Community Radio who won £25. “Naturally it’s very nice to be a winner – but it’s the taking part that really counts – as they say ‘you have to be in it to win it’. So I would encourage everyone to please sign up now.

“Given that we are enduring such prolonged and challenging times I would urge us all who can to give a little bit (or more) to help those who are quite innocently needing a little help and support at this time. It’s very important to share and to spread a little love and enjoyment whenever we can.”
